Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from all of us at OSL!   As we begin preparations to welcome the year 2019, we hope that your Christmas was a blessed, relaxing, family-oriented affair.

At this point, many of you may be considering creating New Year's resolutions.  However, there is a reason that this tired tradition is often mocked as superfluous and silly.  This year, instead of a solo New Year's resolution, consider a family commitment to spreading Jesus' love to all those you encounter.  Instead of attempting to break an annoying habit, lose weight, or get up earlier, consider a joint commitment as a family to bettering the world around you.  This can be achieved in many ways, from making your own home life calmer, to working in the community around you.  Involving your children in this noble endeavor can be simple and fun.  Brainstorm ideas together, make a list, and commit to making a difference in the coming year!

Some ideas to help you get your own lists started include:

  • Monthly family volunteer opportunities at your local food bank or homeless shelter
  • Planning and completing projects to simplify your home life by purging junk and extra items, and donating those in good condition to the less fortunate
  • Having older siblings help younger siblings with homework
  • Allowing the children to help prepare age appropriate meals for the family
  • Planning to eat dinner together as a family (screen free!) at least twice a week
  • Commit to weekly family outdoor/exercise activities
  • Plannning visits to local nursing homes and reading to the residents

God's righest blessings to you as 2019 begins!
