I enjoy all things Celtic. I collect dragons and enjoy planting flowers.
What is one of your favorite hymns, and why is it significant to you?
I have so many to choose from, but the one that means so much to me is “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty.” This hymn includes everything about my relationship with God. It shows the power and also the love that God has for me. I especially like the last phrase, “let the AMEN!, Sound from His people again. Gladly forever adore Him."

What was most appealing to you in wanting to teach at Our Savior Lutheran School?
OSL is a special place to me as an OSL alum parent and now OSL grandparent. It is a wonderful Christ-centered school, with a community of caring teachers and staff. I am grateful that God has provided an opportunity for me to teach at OSL.
What was your favorite class as a scholar and why?
My favorite subject in school was geography. I loved studying different places in the world, discovering various cultures and how they live. I also loved making and coloring maps and memorizing capitals around the world.
What Scripture or story from the Bible has been meaningful to you and why?
II Timothy 1:7 is a scripture I reference often because it reminds me so well to let go of fear and walk with God through difficult times, empowered by His spirit with love and compassion for others.

When you first learned about classical Lutheran education, what aspect grabbed your attention?
I first learned about classical Lutheran education when my oldest daughter was in kindergarten at OSL. During that school year, OSL was transitioning back to its roots and embracing a classical approach to learning. I was captivated by the beauty and order of classical education, which supported our family’s values. This classical approach highlights the good, true, and beautiful in all subjects and encourages viewing all things through a Biblical lens.
What suggestions would you offer for scholars to be successful at Our Savior Lutheran School?
For our scholars to succeed in our school, I believe it is essential to truly live out the summation of God’s Law. As Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:37-39). Our students learn a great deal about loving their neighbors and what that looks like in the context of our school community, which creates a beautiful culture in which to learn and play.
What was a favorite learning experience of yours and why?
I am a product of a Lutheran school, and while it’s difficult to pick just one favorite learning experience, I would have to say that my third-grade teacher, Mr. Paluch, was truly exceptional. He sparked my wonder and moral imagination through C.S. Lewis’ books about Narnia, which I continue to cherish today.

Assistant Pastor, Our Savior Lutheran Church

Who has been a major influence in your life and why?
Pastor Kevin Martin, my pastor in high school, took me under his wing, engaged with me in long theological talks, and put to me work as a server in the Divine Service. He was one of the major influences in my life that lead me to enter the seminary. He currently serves as pastor in Raleigh, North Carolina.
What is your favorite topic (concept, book) to teach and why?
My favorite subject to teach, besides theology, is literature. I love opening up the world of reading to my students and going on adventures with them to far away lands and ages.
What impact would you like Our Savior Lutheran School to have?
I pray that we grow as a family of Christ and a faculty of friends so that we prepare all our scholars for life-long learning and eternal life with Jesus, our Savior.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School?
At OSL, we get to tell students about Jesus Christ. My oldest daughter was in a public-school Kindergarten for a few months before we came to OSL, and one day she came home crying because others made fun of her Disney princess shirt. (We thought it was appropriate for a five-year old, right?) The teacher wasn’t able to talk with the group of “mean girls” in a Christ-centered way. At OSL, we have the freedom to teach children about sin and forgiveness. We can train children to live in love towards their neighbor. We can teach them to have compassion, humility, and to love others the way God loves us – unconditionally, and with love and forgiveness.
What was your favorite class as a scholar and why?
My favorite class as a young kiddo was science and literature. It’s hard to choose just one. I love making messes and getting my hands dirty. I was the kid who stayed after to dissect the extra frogs. I also love a surprise twist in a well-constructed story. Who doesn’t? A large and beautiful Scottish woman with a thick brogue accent taught me Shakespeare in 9th grade, and I have the best memories of her robust and lively discussions with the class. In fact, I have many happy memories from my school days.
As you have researched more about classical Lutheran education, what has surprised or intrigued you the most?
What intrigues me the most about classical Lutheran education is that it’s for everyone. It isn’t just for snobs headed to Ivy League schools or for people with hefty bank accounts or for naturally brainy people. No, classical Lutheran education can be taught to all children, at all levels. As teachers, we meet the child where they are. We shape their minds, teaching them how to think, not what to think. We teach to the whole of body and soul, with wise and eloquent piety. First century Roman teacher Quintilian said that teaching should begin in the nursery for two reasons: 1. To teach proper language and speech; and 2. To develop character. It’s intriguing that we can do that from three years old and on. I’m still learning.

What was most appealing to you in wanting to teach at Our Savior Lutheran School?
There are many perks to teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School. The first is my husband and I can commute to work together most days. The second is the many opportunities for devotions and worship with staff and scholars. The third is making an eternal difference in the future of my scholars' lives.
What are a few of your successful ways of motivating scholars?
Motivating scholars is a mystery, until you find out what motivates them. Verbal praise doesn’t work for all students; however young scholars often need tangible rewards until the joy of learning becomes part of them. When scholars see themselves as being successful, the need for tangible incentives is replaced by the love of learning. Just remind them “I think I can!” until they can.
What are a few of your hobbies and interests?
When not at school, you may see me with Gabriel the Comfort Dog. It’s a great opportunity to spread the love of Jesus with Gabriel.
I’m also a Mimi to Eva June (20 months) and Bailey (six and a half). Every chance I get I’m ready for a visit.
Future aspirations, include a trip to Walt Disney World and a cruise to Alaska.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School?
I love teaching at OSL as it feels like a family. All the staff and parents look out for and help one another. I also love that we can freely share and show the love of Jesus with our children.
What motivates you as a teacher?
My motivation as a teacher is my love for helping children learn and grow and seeing the joy they get when something finally clicks in their brains.
What Scripture or story from the Bible has been meaningful to you and why?
Galatians 3:28 has always spoken to me as it tells us that Jesus came for everyone, no matter where they come from, and to me, that means that we should be sharing His love to everyone everywhere.

Who has had a profound effect on your teaching and how?
My parents, Detlef and Diane Kemnitz, have had the most profound effect on me as a teacher. They dedicated their lives to education. The love and care they had for their students is what ultimately led me to become a teacher.
What is your favorite topic (skill, sport) to teach and why?
I thoroughly enjoy teaching scholars about badminton. It is a game that I enjoy playing, and the scholars have a great time. It is a game that seems very simple, but there is important technique, and once they figure that out, it is fun to see how they strategize.
How would you describe your teaching style?
My teaching style is very simple. I demonstrate everything for my students so they can see how things are done. Once they are practicing on their own, I walk around helping where I am needed.

What attracted you to Our Savior Lutheran School?
Small class sizes, and a school that I would be proud to send my own children to one day. I like having my children attend a Lutheran school with strong foundations in the faith, and one that allows me to share my own faith in the classroom.
Who has been a major influence in your life and why?
My biggest influence is my grandmother. As a teacher of Early Childhood for many years, I followed in her footsteps. Her faith in Christ, along with her desire to share His love with children influenced me to do the same. In memory of my grandmother, I hope that the tradition of sharing the love of Jesus continues in the lives of own my students.
Describe a memorable or rewarding moment of teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School.
Choosing a rewarding moment is hard because I feel so blessed to be at Our Savior. Every day when a former student comes to greet me with a big hug, or a former parent makes it a point to come and check in with me, it makes my heart so full.

What was most appealing to you in wanting to teach at Our Savior Lutheran School?
The warm, welcoming community made me feel at home right away, and I knew it was a place where I could grow, both as a teacher and in my own faith.
What are a few of your hobbies and interests?
I love reading, doing yoga, and spending time with friends and family. I also really enjoy discovering new coffee shops, listening to music, and finding creative ways to bring joy and curiosity into my classroom.
What Scripture or story from the Bible has been meaningful to you and why?
Proverbs 3:5–6 is a verse I come back to again and again. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…” It’s a reminder that even when things don’t make sense, or I feel unsure of what’s next, I don’t have to have it all figured out. God’s already working, even if I can’t see it yet.

At OSL Since 1994
What interests you most about classical Lutheran education?
What interests me most about classical education is its focus on cultivating both the mind and the spirit. I am drawn to the structure of the Trivium—grammar, logic, and rhetoric—because it teaches not just what to think, but how to think. I appreciate how classical education emphasizes great literature and history, allowing me to engage with the ideas that have shaped civilization. It’s not just about memorizing facts; it’s about understanding truth, beauty, and goodness, and applying those ideals to real life. Through our “Learn by Heart”, words of scripture are written on each scholar's heart.
What suggestions would you offer for scholars to be successful at Our Savior Lutheran School?
To be successful at OSL, it’s important to have a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn. Success takes consistent effort, good time management, and the ability to stay focused even when things are difficult. Being curious, asking questions, and engaging in class helps deepen understanding, while communication and respect for others create a positive learning environment.
What was your favorite class as a scholar and why?
Biology was one of my favorites; the wonder in how God made His creation and how it all works together still amazes me. Math was another; I loved the logic in math, working step by step to find an answer.

What interests you most about classical Lutheran education?
Since formally putting a name to how I believe scholars should learn, I have loved getting to know more about and being able to teach in a Classical school. I love to see how the scholars grow from year to year and are able to recall the facts they were given in the previous grades and be able to apply it to their current subjects.
What is your favorite topic (instrument, song) to teach and why?
I enjoy teaching all things music, but I especially love that I can bring instruments in to demonstrate for the scholars. Since I was a band director before being the general music teacher, I have both access to and knowledge about more instruments. It is a great way to not only teach the children about instruments but allow them to see them up close and ask questions.
What was a favorite learning experience of yours and why?
I recently got trained in the First Steps in Music curriculum and look forward to bringing all I learned into the classroom.

What attracted you to Our Savior Lutheran School?
I was attracted to Our Savior by its adherence to the teachings of Lutheran Doctrine and the structure of a Classical Education. The beauty of the campus was also influential. I needed a new Lutheran Teaching position, and the Holy Spirit guided me here.
What motivates you as a teacher?
Being able to teach about Jesus to the students and their families is very important to me. Besides sharing Biblical Truths, being able to share information in all other subjects and watching scholars grow in their understanding about God’s creation and the world He has made and redeemed is also exciting for me.
What are your favorite places to travel and why?
I enjoy traveling to any place where my family lives. My oldest daughter and son live near my mother-in-law in the Amarillo area, and my youngest daughter and her husband now live in Buffalo, NY. One of my brothers and his family live in Colorado; my other brother and his family live in the Waco area, and my parents still live in San Antonio. Family is very important to me, so I enjoy seeing the different parts of the country where they each live. I also enjoyed going to Wisconsin for many years while my youngest attended Concordia University-Wisconsin and then continued to live there for two more years.

As you have researched more about classical Lutheran education, what has surprised or intrigued you the most?
Through the years of teaching using a Classical model and Our Savior, I’m amazed at the importance of repetition and practice in a scholar’s development. OSL scholars are able to memorize and recall huge amounts of information that they practice in Learn by Heart, SQS, Oratio Eloquentium in the Logic School, and in class. Corporate learning all together as a class is very effective.
What is your favorite topic (concept, book) to teach and why?
My favorite genre of novel is the Dystopic novels such as The Giver, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, and Lord of the Flies. They give my scholars and me the opportunity to discuss issues in our society and compare them to a Christian Worldview. Our scholars tend to be very interested in a discussion when it is relatable to their own life and experiences.
Describe a memorable or rewarding moment of teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School.
I always enjoy the Finals for Oratio Eloquentium each year. The scholars are very proud of themselves for the level of learning, understanding, and excellence they have displayed. The entire Our Savior student body is very excited for each presentation and their own class presentation; all the OSL scholars are very enthusiastic when the winners are announced. Finally, I enjoy the response from parents, family, adults, and the judges I’ve recruited. They are so impressed by the Our Savior scholars’ dedication, eloquence, and poise in the Finals.

What interests you most about classical Lutheran education?
I was introduced to Classical Education when I student taught at OSL. I immediately fell in love with Classical Education when I was able to witness the information being taught to students and the wealth of knowledge they were receiving. Classical Education not only provides children with what is good, true, and beautiful but also shows them how to learn and not just memorize a piece of information and never use it again.
Who has had a profound effect on your teaching and how?
I have always wanted to be a teacher, so I would say all my teachers throughout my life have had an effect on me because now here I am in my 20th year of teaching!
What was a favorite learning experience of yours and why?
I love reading! I had a 6th grade teacher who would read to us everyday before class. Every year I now read to my students before class, and I love seeing them get into the story and ask for me to read just one more chapter! I love teaching reading and seeing when my students really take off and become readers and begin reading chapter books!

What was most appealing to you in wanting to teach at Our Savior Lutheran School?
The support that Our Savior Lutheran School has from our church is wonderful. Not every Lutheran school has that kind of love and support from its congregation. The fact that we are a classical Lutheran school is extremely important, as well. I am so grateful to work with administration and fellow teachers that believe in fostering a love of learning in our scholars while cultivating their critical thinking skills and helping them to develop strong communication skills. The best part of teaching at Our Savior is that I am able to share the love of Jesus with every scholar and their family that comes through my classroom. Helping scholars to navigate through difficult times and celebrate with them in their moments of joy at school is so rewarding and is a great blessing in my life.
What was your favorite class as a scholar and why?
My favorite class when I was in school was math--there was no Latin offered then ;-). I loved the challenge of solving difficult equations and mathematical proofs. I think the reason why I loved math so much, and still love it to this day, is because its sense of order and the logical reasoning behind it just made sense to me. When I solved a problem, it was either right, or it was wrong. I really enjoyed the challenge of it all, and finding the correct solutions to problems was extremely satisfying to me.

What Scripture or story from the Bible has been meaningful to you and why?
“He counts the stars and calls them all by name.” (Psalm 147:4)
I love this scripture and how God knows us all, and all of our needs are always taken care of by him.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School?
I love the fact that the school feels like family. There is not a student whom the teachers do not know, which helps all the scholars know that the teachers are there for them.
What was a favorite learning experience of yours and why?
I recently took a refresher course online for Latin. I loved learning new vocabulary, translating passages about historical moments, and the amazing feeling of understanding what I had struggled to learn.
What Scripture or story from the Bible has been meaningful to you and why?
I love the parable of the Prodigal Son. It reminds me that no matter how many times we make mistakes or how often we only think of ourselves, God still wants us, loves us, and waits for us to come to Him with open arms. What a reassurance that is to know that God will always take us back!

What was most appealing to you in wanting to teach at Our Savior Lutheran School?
The reason I chose to teach at OSL is that I get the opportunity to share how God has revealed His creation to mankind in a community that is more like a family.
What is your favorite topic (concept, book) to teach and why?
My favorite topic is Physics. God reveals His order and consistency for His creation.
Describe an accomplishment that has given you much satisfaction.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School?
I enjoy teaching at OSL because it allows me to inspire scholars with my love for learning and show them God’s creation. Every day brings the opportunity to guide students toward God’s truth, helping them grow closer to Jesus. I love watching students gain confidence, ask meaningful questions, and make connections between ideas. Teaching has given me an opportunity to help scholars see the world through a biblical lens. It’s a blessing to nurture not only academic growth but also spiritual formation, guiding students to understand their identity in Christ.
Who has been a major influence in your life and why?
My mother is my inspiration because of her unwavering strength, selflessness, and deep faith. She has faced life’s challenges with grace and resilience, always putting others before herself. Her sacrifices and tireless work as a nurse and helping others and for our family taught me what it means to love unconditionally. She speaks with wisdom and lives with integrity. Her example has shaped my values and continues to guide me in how I treat others and face hardships. She inspires me to be better every day.
What Scripture or story from the Bible has been meaningful to you and why?
Psalm 23:5 is meaningful to me because it speaks to the comfort and assurance I find in God's presence, even during hardship. This means that God not only provides for my needs, but He does so with abundance, honor, and peace—even when I’m surrounded by trials or opposition. It reminds me that He cares and that He blesses me openly and personally. The imagery of a table and overflowing cup is especially powerful—it represents not just survival, but joy and fellowship with Him. It reassures me that I am never forgotten or forsaken, and that He is actively working for my good, even when I cannot see it.

What attracted you to Our Savior Lutheran School?
When I first started teaching at Our Savior I was impressed with their beautiful grounds, the friendliness and support of the staff, and the great community we have with the families we serve. Our Savior was my first call, and I cannot imagine being anywhere else.
Who has had a profound effect on your teaching and how?
While I initially went into teaching because of the wonderful example of my mother as a teacher, I have had many mentors here at OSL who have also shaped my pedagogy and helped me grow in my craft.
What are a few of your successful ways of motivating scholars?
I get excited each year to share with my students of the gifts God has given us. I find when I am excited to teach a subject, they are more excited to learn it! We sing a lot, read a lot, and work hard every day, and it is such a joy to watch them grow academically and spiritually.

P.E. Teacher Preschool - Grade 2

What was most appealing to you in wanting to teach at Our Savior Lutheran School?
After retiring, I often reflected on the joy of working with children. Living across from OSL, I would hear the bells and wonder what it might be like to teach in a private school. When I saw a substitute position posted, I explored the website and was drawn to the programs. After a year away from education, I was ready to return part-time and was blessed with the opportunity—especially in PE, which I taught for 31 years. I quickly rediscovered my love for teaching in a faith-filled, supportive environment.
Who has been a major influence in your life and why?
My parents have been my greatest influence. My father built a successful business through hard work and determination, while my mother lovingly raised our large family. Together, they instilled strong Christian values that continue to guide me.
What are your favorite places to travel and why?
My family and I love to travel, especially to the beach—Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel, Destin, and South Padre are favorites. We also enjoy outdoor destinations like Colorado and Mexico City.

As a former scholar, what attracted you to return to Our Savior Lutheran School to teach?
Returning to Our Savior Lutheran School to teach felt like coming home. As a former OSL scholar, I remember the high-quality education, the deepening of my Christian faith, and the beautiful campus that invited curiosity and exploration. It’s a joy to now be part of the same nurturing environment that shaped me.
What is your favorite topic (concept, book) to teach and why?
I love teaching reading. It’s truly wonderful to witness young scholars begin with learning letter names and sounds and, over time, grow into confident readers. Guiding them through that transformation is both a joy and a privilege.
What are a few of your hobbies and interests?
In my spare time, I enjoy playing with my three children, quilting, and staying active through regular workouts.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School?
I love teaching at OSL because we are a Christ-Centered campus. I love that each day I have the opportunity to share the love of Jesus with each of my scholars in my class. From English to Math, I am teaching students what is good, true, and beautiful about God's magnificent Creation!
What interests you most about classical Lutheran education?
What I love about classical Lutheran education is that it focuses on the heart, mind, and soul of a scholar. Not only do scholars receive the Gospel message, but also learn HOW to think, not WHAT to think through the stages of Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric.
What was a favorite learning experience of yours and why?
My favorite learning experiences are when I am also able to learn with and through my students. One way I have been able to experience this is when teaching progym and literature. Our scholars have such a unique and creative outlook on life and learning that I am always amazed by the connections and thought-processes they are capable of demonstrating.

Grade 3 Teacher

What attracted you to Our Savior Lutheran School?
I grew up attending Our Savior Lutheran Church, so coming back to OSL has been both a homecoming and a calling as God has called me back to teach. Coming back to OSL allows me to give back to my church community. Teaching here is not just a job, but a return to where my faith began.
What motivates you as a teacher?
I am motivated to help form our children through God’s word. Teaching is more than a profession. It is a calling to serve God and my neighbor (scholars). I am motivated to help my scholars to see and love the truth, the good, and the beauty in all things.
What Scripture or story from the Bible has been meaningful to you and why?
Psalm 27:1 is meaningful to me because it reminds me that my strength comes from the Lord and not from me or anyone else. It anchors me in knowing that God is with me at all times and through all challenges.

What impact would you like Our Savior Lutheran School to have?
We are most concerned with the eternal souls of the children we serve. Supporting families with sharing God's Word and His promise of salvation with our scholars is the most important impact we would like for Our Savior Lutheran School to have on our community.
As you have researched more about classical Lutheran education, what has surprised or intrigued you the most?
Martin Luther was a humanist and saw the benefits of teaching children using the liberal arts. I love that what we believe, teach, and confess aligns so readily with classical education.
What are your favorite places to travel and why?
We love to travel to experience new places, but Great Britain and Germany are special places, since Mr. Thoelke's family lives in those places. We also enjoy going to Disney World, because it is super fun and they have great restaurants and accommodations.

Grade 2 Teacher

What was most appealing to you in wanting to teach at Our Savior Lutheran School?
I loved the idea of classical education and the education being centered in Christ.
What interests you most about classical Lutheran education?
I love the "pursuit of truth," aspect of classical education. That no matter what society is telling us is good and right, we fall back on the timeless truths that have been passed down to us. And not only do we have those universal truths to look to, but Christ is at the core of it. We are doing everything to His glory!
What are a few of your hobbies and interests?
In my free time you can usually find me with my nose stuck in a good book, taking care of my garden and plants, adventuring around with my children, or dilly-dallying in the great outdoors.

Logic School English and Literature Teacher
At OSL Since 2025
What attracted you to Our Savior Lutheran School?
I was interested in teaching at OSL for several reasons: I'm Lutheran, I am a classical educator, and I have a dear friend who is in administration at OSL.
What was your favorite class as a scholar and why?
As a scholar, both past and present, my favorite classes were always literature and composition. I love to read and write. I love fiction and non-fiction. I love stories of all kinds.
What motivates you as a teacher?
I am most motivated as a teacher when my students are interested in the topic, engaged in the conversation, and asking questions. I highly encourage questions from all of the students. It is not enough for the teacher and the student to be present... we all have more fun when we are engaged and considering.

Director of Support Services
At OSL Since 2020
What impact would you like support services at Our Savior Lutheran School to have?
At Our Savior Lutheran School, I would like support services to have a transformative impact by helping every student, especially those with learning differences, feel known, equipped, and confident to reach their God-given potential. Effective support should remove barriers to learning while fostering strong partnerships between teachers, families, and students.
Describe an accomplishment that has given you much satisfaction.
One accomplishment that has given me much satisfaction is developing individualized plans that helped struggling students not only meet academic goals but also grow in self-esteem and independence. Seeing a student who once felt defeated become an active participant in the classroom and celebrate their own progress reminds me why this work matters so deeply.
What are your favorite places to travel and why?
Ireland is my favorite place to travel because my family is from there and because it just feels magical. The green hills, old castles, and tiny villages are beautiful, but what I love most are the people — they’re so friendly and fun to talk to. I love sitting and listening to live music or just driving around and finding hidden spots. Every time I go, I feel relaxed and happy, like I’m part of a good story.
